Thousands of New Zealanders call on Countdown to up their chicken welfare

News

A whopping 14,676 New Zealanders are demanding that supermarket chain Countdown give their chickens room to move and flap their wings.

Thanks to your support, these signatures were successfully submitted to the supermarket chain.

Chickens are naturally inquisitive and sensitive birds who want nothing more than to be able to perch, forage, explore and dustbathe. These activities help in keeping these sentient beings active and healthy.

However, Countdown barely gives their chickens enough room to express these natural and instinctual behaviours which are important for their well-being.

You spoke out in your thousands to show the supermarket chain that there is no excuse to lag behind on chicken welfare, especially when their parent company, Woolworths in Australia, has signed up to a voluntary higher chicken welfare scheme for their home brand chicken.

Around the globe, brands like KFC in Europe and Nandos in the UK have already committed to giving their chickens better lives by signing the Better Chicken Commitment. And your tireless support is helping move more companies in Aotearoa to sign up and make this humane change for chickens.

With you by their side, every chicken can have a life worth living.
