Protestors call for dolphin breeding ban at Sea World on the Gold Coast

Thanks to your support we’re continuing to take a stand against breeding dolphins in captivity.

World Animal Protection representatives joined forces with MP Emma Hurst of the Animal Justice Party, Animal Liberation Queensland and Dolphin Freedom Fighters to be a voice for dolphins.

The peaceful protest and sky banner helped draw attention to the issues facing dolphins in captivity and why a captive breeding ban is necessary. 

Head of Campaigns at World Animal Protection, Ben Pearson said:

“We want these dolphins at Sea World to be the last generation kept captive for entertainment in Queensland.

“The only other dolphin venue in Australia, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park in New South Wales, recognises the changing public attitudes around dolphin captivity and is working with us and Action for Dolphins to establish a sea sanctuary for their remaining dolphins.

“This really goes to show that Sea World is out of touch with Australian society and a relic of the past.”

Around 30 dolphins are kept at Sea World, with most being bred at the park. These incredibly intelligent animals can live for up to 50 years in captivity. That’s a long time to spend in a small, barren pool performing the same tricks for visitors, day after day, year after year.

Together, we want to ensure that this is the last generation of dolphins to suffer a lifetime in captivity.  We’re calling on the Queensland Government to ban captive breeding at Sea World.
