Caught on camera: Not an isolated case

News

A Northland sharemilker has been caught on hidden cameras hitting dairy cows with a steel pipe in his milking shed.

A month’s footage from the hidden cameras supplied to Newsroom shows the sharemilker repeatedly hitting cows during milking. At times the cows were hit on the head, at other times their legs were struck with a steel pipe.

World Animal Protection is working with other animal welfare advocates to ensure this case of abuse is not simply passed off as an ‘isolated’ one.

New Zealand unfortunately has a dark ‘list of shame’ when it comes to the treatment of dairy cows. Animal Welfare advocate and Barrister Catriona Maclennan collated and shared the following list on Newsroom. Please also feel free to share this list, although please be warned, the content is distressing. You can read the full list of shame here.

We await the formal response from the Ministry for Primary Industries.
