MandaLao Elephant Conservation was the first non-riding elephant sanctuary in Luang Prabang – giving elephants lives worth living.
You’ll be pleased to know that Intrepid Travel Foundation is supporting the amazing work you help make possible at MandaLao by funding a much-needed night enclosure to accommodate six elephants.
Why is the night time enclosure so vital to the elephants’ wellbeing? The enclosure ensures the elephants remain safe at night – as it protects them from wandering onto neighbouring land where they might destroy crops and come into conflict with farmers.
It also allows the entire elephant herd at MandaLao to go chain-free and interact throughout the day and night. Remember, elephants are highly intelligent and very social animals.
MandaLao is now home to 11 elephants – all of them rescued from local riding and logging camps. Here, these once-captive elephants can safely roam through forests and a river, free to eat what they want and express their natural behaviours.
Laos’ most responsible elephant retreat
This latest project was coordinated by World Animal Protection and made possible with the help of generous supporters like you. The goal is to help promote elephant-friendly tourism in the area by ensuring MandaLao has the resources to become a shining example for other elephant venues.

You’re helping elephants just be elephants again
Visitors can spend time with the elephants in a positive and intimate way through the Conservation’s organised tours which include trekking through the jungle and walking alongside these beautiful animals. There are no rides or tricks, just enjoyment of the elephants in their natural surroundings.
