Animals in disasters in New Zealand

If disaster were to strike today, would you have a plan to save yourself and your pet?

Now more than ever, we need emergency management plans to support Kiwi owners and their pets to ensure the protection of our local communities and animals in a disaster. We all know that disaster can strike at any time, so it's up to all of us to make sure we have a plan not only for our family but also for our pets.

The problem

Image text: Disasters can strike quickly and with no warning: The 2011 Christchurch Earthquake is proof of this in New Zealand. In a disaster, the lives of your family and your pet(s) can be put in danger. To 'stay safe' in a disaster, you may need to all 'stay put' or evacuate together. Both options need a plan that also includes supplies for your family and pet(s)

By law, in New Zealand, everyone who owns a pet is required to take all reasonable steps to ensure that the physical health, and all other needs of the animals are met at all times, including in a disaster.

The solution

Image text: have a disaster plan for your family that includes your family pet(s). Make that plan now and save precious time in a disaster. By saving precious time in a disaster, your pet plan could end up saving the precious life of your entire family.

Prepare for your pet in a disaster or you could lose each other forever...

The right time to make a disaster plan is now.

By making a disaster plan for your family and pets, your pet may actually end up saving your life; as you and your pet will be well prepared to evacuate fast or stay put, with enough supplies when a disaster strikes. A plan will help stop delays or panicked wrong decisions that could end up putting your lives (and others) at risk.
