Keeping your dog happy and healthy starts at home
Dogs give us companionship and affection. Many people even see them as a member of the family.
Dogs require your time and financial commitment. If you’re a dog owner, it’s your responsibility to give them the care they deserve so they can be happy and healthy.
Most dog owners in New Zealand have good access to veterinary care, and your vet can be a great source of information and advice. But caring for your dog starts at home – you need to make sure you’re meeting their basic needs, and doing what you can to keep them happy.

What does your dog need to be happy and healthy?
Sadly, many dogs around the world suffer from inadequate care and neglect. It’s important to know what your dog’s basic needs are, and how you can meet them and keep your dog happy.

Caring for dogs around the world
With the help of our supporters, World Animal Protection works to promote responsible dog ownership around the world.
This includes programs in developing countries, where access to animal protection information and veterinary care can be scarce or unavailable.
Our responsible dog ownership work aims to stop dogs being abused or abandoned. Working in countries where dog culling is a problem, we train owners to care for dogs humanely and push for better dog population management – ultimately helping people and dogs live happily and safely side by side.
